International

International scholarships fund study at universities outside South Africa, or bring students to specific programmes abroad. They are among the most competitive awards, and they usually combine academic strength, leadership and a clear plan for how you will use the qualification when you return.

The funders include governments, universities, foundations and international organisations. Some cover tuition, flights and living costs in full, while others pay part of the costs. Many also expect you to return to South Africa or to a region of focus after your studies, so read the conditions on returning home.

What funders usually ask for:

  • An excellent academic record, usually at degree level.
  • References, a personal statement and often an interview.
  • Proof of English language ability, such as a test result, for some destinations.
  • A valid passport and, later, a visa for the country where you will study.

Deadlines are early, sometimes a year before you travel, so plan well ahead. Our guide to studying abroad without debt goes through the options, and the postgraduate category lists related awards.
