SMU Residence and Accommodation

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has university-owned and leased residences. Places are limited, and admission to study does not guarantee a residence place. The details below come from SMU's application FAQs and its 2026 registration notices.

How to apply

There is an option for a residence application on SMU's application form, so indicate that you need accommodation when you apply to study. Places are awarded on a first come, first served basis, and the university is not obliged to provide accommodation for everyone.

When residences open

In 2026, student residences opened on 5 January. No unregistered student is allowed in the residences, so complete your registration first.

Registration first

First-time entering students registered online from 21 to 30 January 2026, using the iEnabler self-help portal. Admitted applicants had to register within three days of accepting their offers, or lose their places, so act quickly if you want your residence place too.

Fees

SMU's 2026 sundry fees include a residence administration fee of R3,425, and residence fees are added to your account. Self-funded students pay the R4,500 registration fee before registering. Read more on the SMU fees page.

What to plan for

Budget for residence fees, meals, books and transport on top of tuition. Remember that the R4,500 registration fee for self-funded students is due before you register, and registration comes before you can move in.

Students with disabilities

If you have a disability that affects your accommodation needs, raise it with SMU when you apply, so that the university can consider suitable arrangements.

Keys and access

SMU's sundry fees also list charges for replacing a lost key (R111), changing a key cylinder (R562) and replacing an access card (R240), so look after your keys and card.

NSFAS students

If NSFAS funds you, keep your confirmation letter ready. NSFAS and public sector sponsors' students are usually cleared for registration automatically, which you need before you can move into residence.

Private accommodation

If you do not get a residence place, look for private accommodation near the campus. NSFAS students should check whether NSFAS will fund the accommodation before signing a lease.

Orientation

All new students are expected to attend orientation, which in 2026 ran from 27 to 30 January at the University Sports Complex. It covers the university's structures and services, and how to use them.

Registration help

SMU runs a call centre during registration on 012 521 4204, 012 521 4319, 012 521 4644 and 012 521 5057.

International students

International students cannot register before the International Office clears them. Contact it on 012 521 6001.
