SMU Student Portal (iEnabler)

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Students at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) use the iEnabler self-help portal to register online and to check for academic and financial blocks. The guidance below comes from SMU's 2026 registration notices and its finance guidelines.

Registering online

Registration at SMU happens online through the iEnabler self-help portal. In 2026, first-time entering students registered from 21 to 30 January, and returning students from 5 January. Students who have been financially cleared can register online, on or off campus.

Bring your own device

SMU expects students to use their own laptops or smartphones to register, so make sure you have one ready with internet access.

Checking for blocks

Use the iEnabler to check whether you have academic or financial blocks before registration. Staff from the Enrolment Management Office and the schools can help lift academic blocks and confirm your module choices during office hours.

Financial clearance

  • Self-funded students pay the R4,500 registration fee first.
  • Students with NSFAS or verified sponsor confirmation are usually unblocked automatically.
  • Returning students with outstanding debt sign an acknowledgement of debt and meet SMU's payment thresholds.

Choosing modules

You are responsible for composing your programme of study under the general rules and your school's rules. When you register for each module, make sure there are no timetable clashes. You may only attend lectures and clinical work for modules you are registered for.

International students

International students cannot register on the portal until the International Office clears them under South African law. Contact it on 012 521 6001.

Academic exclusions

SMU publishes its academic exclusion appeals and application procedures on its registration pages. If you have an academic block, contact your school or the Enrolment Management Office before registration closes.

Returning students' credits

Returning students who owe nothing and have a credit of R4,500 or more on their account are unblocked for registration automatically.

Your student card

SMU's sundry fees list R230 for replacing a student ID card and R240 for an access card, so keep yours safe.

Orientation

After registration, attend orientation, which in 2026 ran from 27 to 30 January. It explains the university's services and how to access them.

Getting help

During registration, call SMU's call centre on 012 521 4204, 012 521 4319, 012 521 4644 or 012 521 5057. For application questions, email enquiries@smu.ac.za.

Keep your details safe

Never share your login details with anyone, and keep your contact information up to date, so that SMU's messages reach you.
