TUT Admission Requirements

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) admits first-year students based on their National Senior Certificate subjects and their Admission Point Score, or APS. Each diploma and degree sets its own minimum APS, subject levels and closing date. The figures below come from TUT's general information guide for first-year enrolment in 2027.

General rules for all TUT programmes

You need a National Senior Certificate, or an equivalent, with at least six subjects. These must include English as a home or first additional language at level 3 or higher, along with Mathematics, Technical Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, depending on the programme. National law also sets a floor. A bachelor's degree needs at least four subjects at level 4, and a diploma needs at least four subjects at level 3.

TUT leaves out Life Orientation when it calculates your APS. It also ignores any subject where you scored level 1. You may apply with your Grade 11 or mid-year Grade 12 results, and TUT may give you provisional admission until your final results arrive.

Minimum APS for popular TUT programmes

  • Diploma in Accounting: APS 22, or 24 with Mathematical Literacy
  • Diploma in Financial Management: APS 22, or 24 with Mathematical Literacy
  • Diploma in Internal Auditing: APS 22, or 24 with Mathematical Literacy
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Civil or Electrical Engineering: APS 30
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering: APS 28
  • Diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering: APS 26
  • Diploma in Computer Science: APS 26 with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
  • Diploma in Information Technology: APS 26 with Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
  • Bachelor of Nursing: APS 27
  • BEd Foundation Phase or Intermediate Phase Teaching: APS 25
  • Diploma in Marketing, Human Resource Management or Tourism Management: APS 24
  • Diploma in Law or Policing: APS 20

Closing dates differ by programme

TUT lists a closing date under each programme. Most diplomas and degrees in accounting, engineering, IT and management close on 30 September. However, education, journalism, law and policing programmes close on 31 July, and the Bachelor of Nursing closes on 15 June. So check your programme early, because missing its date means waiting another year.

Campus matters too

Each programme runs on specific campuses. For example, the Diploma in Accounting is offered at Ga-Rankuwa, Mbombela and Polokwane, while the BEd programmes run at Soshanguve North. Make sure that you can study at the campus that offers your choice.

Places are limited

TUT accepts students according to its enrolment plan, so meeting the minimum APS does not guarantee a place. A programme may close early once it is full. Therefore, apply as soon as applications open on 1 April.
