How to Apply to TUT

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

You apply to Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) online, through its website. First-year applications for the 2027 academic year opened on 1 April 2026. The application fee is R240, and each programme has its own closing date, so plan ahead. Here is how the process works, based on TUT's 2027 first-year guide.

Before you start

Have all your documents ready before you go online. TUT also asks you to create your own email address first, and not to use anyone else's. Your password must be six to 12 characters long, with a mix of numbers and letters, one special character and one uppercase letter.

Next, look up your programme in the first-year course information. It lists the closing date, the campus and the subject requirements. Some programmes, such as Nursing, close as early as 15 June, while many others close on 30 September.

Documents you need

  • Proof of payment of the R240 application fee
  • A certified copy of your ID document or card
  • A certified copy of your National Senior Certificate, or your final Grade 11 results if you are in Grade 12

Paying the application fee

The application fee for 2027 is R240. It is compulsory for all first-time applicants, you pay it only once, and TUT does not refund it. TUT's guide says to deposit it at ABSA and to use your ID number as the reference. Check the guide for the current account details before you pay.

Apply early

A programme may close at any time once it is full, even before its deadline. So apply as soon as you can after applications open. Online programmes follow a separate timeline, and for 2027 their deadline is 16 January 2027.

Checking your admission status

  1. Visit the TUT website.
  2. Click on Study@TUT.
  3. Select Check Your Status.
  4. Enter your ID number.
  5. Click Submit to see your status.

A new screen then shows your reference number and your admission status. If TUT has made you an offer, you can view and print the letter.

After you receive an offer

To reserve your place, TUT asks for a confirmation payment of R1,500 within three days of the date on your acceptance letter. If you do not pay it, TUT automatically cancels your place. Read more on the TUT fees page.

For application questions, call the TUT Contact Centre on 086 110 2421. TUT does not accept cash payments on any campus, so pay by card, electronic transfer or bank deposit. If you have international qualifications, start the process for a SAQA or CHE certificate of equivalence early, because TUT cannot obtain it for you.
