Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) sets out its payment rules in the student fees section of its prospectus. Tuition amounts depend on your programme, so TUT gives them on your account and registration documents rather than in one public table. The rules below come from TUT's 2026 prospectus, which is valid for 2026 only, so check the 2027 edition when it appears.
Fees when you apply and accept
- Application fee: R240, paid once and not refundable
- Confirmation payment: R1,500 within three days of your acceptance letter, to reserve your place
If you fail Grade 12 or have another valid reason for not registering, TUT refunds the confirmation payment less R220.
Paying at registration
Before you register, you must make a minimum initial payment of R1,500 towards your tuition. This applies to new and returning students. Payments into the TUT bank account take three working days to reflect, while electronic payments at a campus cashier reflect immediately. TUT does not accept cash on its campuses.
Paying the balance
For year programmes, you pay the rest of your class fees in nine instalments, from 28 February to 31 October. First-semester programmes use three instalments on 28 February, 31 March and 30 April. Second-semester programmes pay on 31 August, 30 September and 31 October.
Residence fees
You pay nothing when you submit a residence application. However, you must pay R1,200 in advance before you register in a residence. For year accommodation, the balance falls due in ten instalments from January to October. Residence fees are available from the residence office at your campus.
Discounts
- Early payment: 5% off class fees for year programmes if you pay in full by 30 April. This excludes bursaries from financial aid and NSFAS allocations.
- Family discount: 15% off class fees for a second student from the same household, and 25% for each further student.
TUT gives no discount on residence fees, and you must apply for a discount in writing.
Other charges
Most full-time students pay a non-refundable student services fee of R550. Late registration costs an extra R400, and international students pay an extra R1,900 a year.
Cancelling your studies
Registering makes you liable for all prescribed fees, even if you later cancel part or all of your registration. Cancelling a programme also does not cancel your residence place automatically, so you must sign off at the residence on the day you leave to reduce your accommodation fees. International students can pay through TUT's Flywire payment link.
Funding your studies
Qualifying students can apply for NSFAS, which funds students at all 26 public universities. Many companies also fund TUT students in engineering and technical fields. Browse our bursaries, or read the TUT overview.
