The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) admits students based on an Admission Point Score (APS) and the subject levels that each programme sets. Its minimums range from 19 for some higher certificates to 33 for the Bachelor of Laws. The figures below come from UMP's undergraduate programmes guide.
How the APS works at UMP
Your APS adds up the NSC achievement ratings (levels 1 to 7) of your subjects. Several programmes ask for a higher APS if you took Mathematical Literacy instead of Mathematics. For the BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching, UMP uses your seven prescribed subjects and divides your Life Orientation rating by two. If you took more than three electives, it uses the four compulsory subjects and your three best electives.
Minimum APS for popular UMP programmes
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB): 33, with a bachelor's pass, English and an additional language at level 4, and Mathematics at level 3 or Mathematical Literacy at level 4

- Bachelor of Social Work: 32
- Bachelor of Development Studies: 32
- Bachelor of Administration: 32, with a second language at level 4

English requirement
Almost every UMP programme asks for English, as a home or first additional language, at level 4 (50% to 59%).
Monthly selection
Several UMP programmes select applicants every month. For the LLB, applicants who exceed the minimum and have completed their NSC receive conditional offers, while those who just meet the requirements are placed on hold and considered again each month. UMP reserves at least half of the LLB places for applicants completing the NSC.
Grade 11 results
For programmes such as the BEd, UMP bases preliminary admission on your final Grade 11 results and final admission on your Grade 12 results.
TVET routes
Many UMP programmes also accept a National Certificate (Vocational) at level 4 with set marks. For example, the Diploma in Nature Conservation accepts NCV level 4 in Primary Agriculture with at least 50% in English.
