How to Apply to the University of Mpumalanga

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

You apply to the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) online. Applications for 2027 admission opened on 1 June 2026, and undergraduate applications close on 30 November 2026. In September 2026, UMP's Council decided to discontinue application fees for the 2027 academic year and onwards.

Closing dates for 2027

  • Undergraduate programmes and advanced diplomas: 30 November 2026
  • Honours, postgraduate diplomas, master's and doctoral programmes: 30 January 2027

No application fee

UMP's Council approved dropping application fees on 29 September 2026. UMP says that 85% of its registered students in 2026 were NSFAS-funded, and that fees created barriers for students from poor backgrounds. Applicants who had already paid an application fee in 2026 receive a credit towards their initial deposit, or a refund.

Before you start

Have electronic copies of your documents ready to upload, in PDF, Word, TIFF, PNG or JPEG format. You need certified copies of your identity document, your Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate (or latest results), and any other relevant documents.

The application steps

  1. Start your application and capture your biographical information.
  2. Create a 5-digit PIN. Your student number then appears on screen, so write it down.
  3. On the application portal, accept the POPI Act notice and the application rules.
  4. Capture your address, next of kin and contact details.
  5. Capture any disabilities, or select No Disability.
  6. Capture your school leaving subjects and any previous studies.
  7. Upload your supporting documents.
  8. Add your academic applications, with a maximum of two programme choices.
  9. Add a residence application, if you need one.
  10. Finish when the progress confirmation shows 100%.

International applicants

International applicants pay no application fee from 2027 either. When they register, they must provide a police clearance and proof of initial payment or a sponsor's confirmation letter, and pay 50% of their tuition fee first.

Keep your student number

Write down the student number that appears when you create your PIN. You use it with your PIN to log in to the iEnabler student portal, where you can return to your application and later register.

Check the APS and subjects for both choices on the UMP admission requirements page. Some programmes, such as the LLB and the Diploma in Nature Conservation, select applicants monthly, so applying early can help.

After you are accepted

An offer of admission does not include financial assistance from UMP, so arrange funding from NSFAS or another source. Before you register, pay the initial deposit and be financially cleared, at least 48 hours before registration. Read more on the UMP fees page.
