The UP Portal is the online gateway for students at the University of Pretoria (UP). You use it to track applications, accept offers, submit your contract, check your accounts and manage your student services. The guidance below comes from UP's frequently asked questions.
Logging in for the first time
- Open the UP Portal and click New User.
- Enter your student number, which starts with a small letter u (for example, u00000000), as your username.
- Type in your ID or passport number and click Proceed.
- Follow UP's step-by-step instructions to set up your portal password.
What you can do on the portal
- See your application status and messages, and accept or decline offers
- Complete your enrolment contract
- Check your financial accounts, which appear shortly after registration
- Get tuition fee quotations as a self-help function
- Apply for a refund on the Student Centre
- Reapply for or cancel residence accommodation through Self Service
- Register for TuksPrint
Your UP email
When you register, UP automatically creates an email address for you, made up of a small u, your student number and the Tuks domain. Your first password is your ID number. If you prefer not to receive email at the Tuks address, create an alias through the email settings link on the portal. Only you can change your email address, on the portal, because UP staff cannot change it for you.
Internet access
All registered students have free internet access on all campuses and in residences, through UP's Wi-Fi hotspots.
IT support
The Student IT Hub at the Student Centre on the Hatfield Campus offers technical and software support, including help with hardware problems, software installation and access to systems. For connection problems, call the Student ITS Helpdesk on 012 420 3837.
Residence on the portal
If you applied for accommodation, your residence status and placement letter appear on the portal. You accept or reject a residence place there, and current residents reapply or cancel for the next year through Self Service on the Student Centre.
Why the portal matters
UP communicates through the portal and email, and it does not post documents to bursars or parents. So log in often, especially between your application and registration, when offers and final admission decisions arrive.
Keep your account safe
Change your first password, never share your login details, and keep your preferred email address and cellphone number up to date. See the UP application status page, or read the UP overview.
