Campuses
Each campus teaches different fields, so check where your programme is offered before you apply. Fort Hare publishes contact details for both the Alice and East London campuses on its admission pages.
Minimum requirements for a degree
- English, as a home or first additional language, at level 4 (50% to 59%) or higher
- Level 4 or higher in four other subjects, plus level 2 (30% to 39%) or higher in one more subject
- Life Orientation at level 4 or higher
Together, these give a minimum APS of 26, depending on the programme. Faculties may set higher minimums and specific pass levels for different programmes.
Programmes with higher minimums
- LLB: an APS of 27 with Mathematics, or 28 with Mathematical Literacy, in Fort Hare's 2026 law prospectus
- Bachelor of Social Work: an APS of 27
- Bachelor of Commerce (Economics stream): an APS of 28
Programmes in the sciences and agriculture also set specific Mathematics and science levels, so check your exact programme in the study guide.
Study guides
Fort Hare publishes undergraduate and postgraduate study guides each year, with the programmes in each faculty and their requirements. Download the 2027 guides from its admission pages, and use its APS calculator with your mid-year or final NSC marks.
Teaching degrees
If you plan to become a teacher, the Faculty of Education's Bachelor of Education degrees can be funded through the Funza Lushaka bursary, which supports teaching qualifications in areas of national priority.
Postgraduate study
Admission requirements for honours, master's and doctoral programmes vary by faculty and programme. Some faculties require minimum average marks, specific majors or registration with professional bodies.
Applying from outside South Africa
Applicants with non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption certificate, and SAQA must evaluate their qualifications. Fort Hare lists acceptable school qualifications by country.
Changing your course
If you want to change the course you applied for, Fort Hare's support FAQ explains how to do it through the student portal, under your academic applications.
