The University of Fort Hare (UFH) publishes undergraduate and postgraduate study guides each year, and a general prospectus with the university's rules. On its admission pages, you can download the 2027 undergraduate and postgraduate study guides. Here is what these documents contain and how to use them.

Fort Hare's study guides set out the programmes in each faculty and their admission requirements. Its admission pages also have an APS calculator and a list of important events and closing dates.

The general prospectus
The 2026 General Prospectus contains Fort Hare's vision and mission, the academic calendar, the general rules for admission, registration and assessment, the fee rules, merit fee waivers, the general rules for residences and the student disciplinary rules.
Minimum requirements
Fort Hare's bachelor's degrees need English at level 4, four other subjects at level 4, one more at level 2, and Life Orientation at level 4. This gives a minimum APS of 26, depending on the programme. Faculties may set higher minimums.
How to use these documents
- Use the APS calculator with your mid-year or final NSC marks.
- Find your programme in the undergraduate study guide.
- Check the campus, because Alice, Bhisho and East London teach different fields.
- Read the fee rules and merit waivers in the general prospectus.
- Apply online through Fort Hare's application portal.
Merit fee waivers
The 2026 prospectus lists merit fee waivers for new undergraduates, from R3,500 for 34 merit points to full tuition for 48 points or more.
Postgraduate study guide
The postgraduate study guide explains admission to honours, master's and doctoral programmes, which vary by faculty and may require minimum average marks, specific majors or professional registration.
Fees and payment
The general prospectus also explains when fees are due: at least 50% by the end of June and 100% by the end of November, for students without financial aid or a payment agreement. Fort Hare gives a 10% discount if you pay all fees at registration.
International applicants
Applicants with non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption, and SAQA must evaluate their qualifications. Fort Hare lists acceptable school qualifications by country.
Closing dates
For 2027, undergraduate applications closed on 31 October 2026, and the application fee is R120 for South African applicants.
