MUT Admission Requirements

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) admits students based on a points aggregate and the subject requirements of each programme. Its faculties calculate your points from the best five subjects you present, and some departments add a compulsory entrance test. The details below come from MUT's admission requirements and application pages and its 2026 general rules handbook.

How MUT calculates your points

MUT converts your NSC percentages to points: 90% to 100% earns 8 points, 80% to 89% earns 7, 70% to 79% earns 6, 60% to 69% earns 5, 50% to 59% earns 4 and 40% to 49% earns 3. Your points aggregate comes from your best five subjects. The minimum points for each programme are set by its faculty and listed in the CAO handbook.

Minimum entrance requirements

  • A National Senior Certificate with a diploma pass, or N3 with 50% in Mathematics and English
  • At least five subjects at level 4 for diploma study, or level 3 for access courses
  • English, as a home or first additional language, at level 4
  • The subject combination and levels relevant to your qualification

MUT's general rules also require NSC candidates to have passed six recognised 20-credit subjects at level 3 or better, not counting Life Orientation.

If you matriculated before 2008, you need a Senior Certificate with at least five subjects passed, including English and at least one Higher Grade subject.

Faculty subject requirements

  • Faculty of Management Sciences: English, Mathematics and Accounting, all at 50% or above, with a minimum of 25 points for all programmes
  • Faculty of Engineering: English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, all at 50% or above
  • Faculty of Applied and Health Sciences: English and Mathematics, plus the relevant sciences, such as Physical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences or Life Sciences, all at 50% or above

Every faculty also runs further departmental screening, so check the requirements for your exact programme.

Competition for places

MUT has about 3,500 places for first-time entering students across its three faculties. By the end of October, it receives more than 80,000 applications from first-time students. Selection is therefore difficult, and it prioritises the best-qualified applicants and those who chose MUT as their first or second choice.

Other qualifications

MUT accepts N3 results for some programmes. It also considers international school leaving certificates, such as the IGCSE and A-levels, with minimum pass grades for each type.

Meeting the minimum

MUT says that not all applicants who meet the minimum requirements can be accepted, because space is limited. It also keeps the right to set further selection tests for specific fields of study. So aim above the minimum, and put MUT first on your CAO application if it is your preferred university.
