MUT Fees

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Fees at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) depend on the modules you take and whether you need accommodation. Before you can register, you pay a minimum initial payment (MIP), which MUT sets off against your fee account. The figures below come from MUT's Student Fees and Finance Rules Handbook for 2026.

The acceptance fee

MUT charges an acceptance fee of R500 for each application. It is not refundable, and it forms part of your deposit once your registration is successful.

Minimum initial payment in 2026

  • Tuition only: R4,000 for annual registration, or R2,275 for a semester
  • Tuition and an internal residence: R18,025 annually, or R8,890 for a semester
  • Tuition and an external or new internal residence: R28,950 annually, or R14,045 for a semester

The annual tuition-only amount is made up of a tuition deposit of R3,450, an SRC levy of R430 and a sport levy of R120. The SRC and sport levies are compulsory and paid upfront.

Pre-Tech students

Students on the Pre-Tech programme must pay upfront for both tuition and accommodation.

Paying the balance

You pay the rest of your fees in monthly instalments. For annual registration, these run from March to December. For first-semester registration, they run from March to July, and for second-semester registration from August to December.

How to pay

  • Debit order: complete a debit order form. MUT charges R300 for every rejected debit order.
  • EFT or bank deposit: use only your student number as the reference, and pay at least three days before registration

Email your proof of payment to student.debtors@mut.ac.za, and pay only into MUT's official account.

Checking your balance

MUT sends fee balances by SMS every month. You can also view your statement online on the student portal, through iEnabler, using your student number and PIN.

NSFAS and bursaries

NSFAS-approved students are cleared for registration once MUT receives the list of approved students from NSFAS. NSFAS does not fund late module registration or late registration penalties. Students with an NSFAS appeal must pay the deposit to register, and can claim it back if the appeal succeeds. External bursars must send an original sponsorship letter to the Financial Aid Office at least three days before registration.

Students with debt

You cannot register until you have paid any arrear fees, the registration deposit and all levies. If you miss the payment dates, MUT may withhold your results, cancel your enrolment or hand your account to debt collectors.
