How to Apply to MUT

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

All first-year applications to Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) go through the Central Applications Office (CAO), online at www.cao.ac.za. The CAO lets you apply for more than one programme on one application, with a single application fee. MUT gives preference to applicants who meet the requirements and who make MUT their first choice.

Closing dates

MUT's application page says applications open in January and close on 30 September, with late applications accepted until 30 November. Late applications carry a fee set by the CAO. The page lists these faculty dates:

  • Faculty of Engineering: 30 September for the first semester, and 31 May for the second semester
  • Faculty of Applied and Health Sciences: 30 September, with 31 May for second-semester Analytical Chemistry
  • Faculty of Management Sciences: 30 September

MUT's 2026 general rules handbook gives slightly different dates. It says applications for Environmental Health, Agriculture, Community Extension and Nature Conservation must reach the CAO before 30 September, and that all other applications close on 31 October. So apply by 30 September to be safe. MUT notifies applicants as soon as possible after the closing dates.

Step 1: Choose your programmes

Check the points and subjects you need on the MUT admission requirements page. The minimum points for each programme are also listed in the CAO handbook.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

  • Your final Grade 11 results, Grade 12 June exam results, or your National Senior Certificate or statement of results
  • Your identity document or ID card
  • An academic record and a certificate of conduct, if you are transferring from another university

Non-South African applicants also need valid medical insurance, a police clearance certificate and their school leaving certificate.

Step 3: Apply through the CAO

Complete the CAO application and pay the CAO fee. Put MUT as your first choice if it is your preferred university, because competition is keen.

Why apply early

MUT receives more than 80,000 applications each year for about 3,500 first-year places. It says that applicants who meet the requirements and apply on time receive immediate attention.

Selection dates

MUT's 2026 calendar shows that it selects 2027 candidates who are still in matric from 28 September to 23 October 2026. It selects candidates who already have their matric from 1 October to 4 December 2026.

After you are accepted

MUT charges an acceptance fee of R500 for each application. It is not refundable, but it counts towards your deposit once you register. Read more on the MUT fees page.
