Campuses and study modes
Certain programmes are offered only on certain campuses. Some are available through distance learning, while others are full-time contact programmes. Check where and how your programme is offered before you apply.
Costs
Tuition depends on your programme. NWU offers a personalised tuition fee estimate on its website, so you can compare programmes and plan with confidence. Its estimates cover tuition only, and exclude extra costs such as books and residence. Read more on the NWU fees page.
Open days
NWU holds open days on each campus, where you can meet faculties and see the programmes. In 2025, they took place in May at Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark.
Distance learning
Distance students study without attending full-time classes on campus. In 2026, they paid the same first minimum payment as non-residence students, R12,855. NWU's fields of study pages show which programmes are offered by distance learning.
Selection courses
Some NWU programmes are selection courses with an earlier closing date. For the 2026 intake, selection courses closed on 30 June 2025, two months before general applications. Check whether your programme is a selection course.
Choose carefully
You can apply only once per academic year, with two study choices. NWU accepts you into only one course, so if your second choice is accepted, you will not be considered for your first choice. Make sure both choices meet the admission criteria and suit your career goals.
If you do not meet the requirements
If you do not meet a programme's admission requirements, the qualification will not be available to you on the application system. Meeting the minimum requirements also does not guarantee admission, and NWU's admission decisions are final, with no appeals. See the NWU admission requirements page.
