Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

The University of the Free State (UFS) offers undergraduate programmes through seven faculties on three campuses: Bloemfontein, South Campus and Qwaqwa. The details below come from the UFS 2027 undergraduate prospectus.

UFS's faculties

  • Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Law
  • Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
  • Faculty of the Humanities
  • Faculty of Theology and Religion

The prospectus lists each programme with its academic plan code, minimum AP, English and Mathematics requirements, and the campus where it is offered.

The three campuses

  • Bloemfontein Campus: home to all seven faculties and a Business School, with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It has Braille-guided areas, ramps and lifts for universal access.
  • Qwaqwa Campus: in the Maloti-Drakensberg, focusing on engaged science, research and innovation, with programmes in faculties such as Economic and Management Sciences, Education, the Humanities and Natural and Agricultural Sciences
  • South Campus: south of Bloemfontein, the centre of UFS's blended learning, home to the BEd Foundation Phase programme and extended curriculum programmes

Programmes on one campus only

Some programmes are offered only on the Bloemfontein Campus, including the Faculty of Health Sciences programmes. Health Sciences students must be highly motivated, and selection is competitive. Check the campus code next to each programme before you apply.

Extended curriculum programmes

UFS offers extended curriculum programmes, several of them on the South Campus or at Qwaqwa, for students who need extra support before entering mainstream study. Qwaqwa has its own extended curriculum coordinator in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

University access programmes

If you do not meet the requirements for a degree, UFS also runs university access programmes. Contact Academic Advising on 051 401 9111, option 2.

Support services

UFS's Centre for Universal Access and Disability Support helps students with disabilities on each campus, and Student Counselling and Development offers counselling and development support. Contact CUADS at cuads@ufs.ac.za on the Bloemfontein Campus.

International students

International applicants follow extra steps, such as applying for a study visa and arranging a matriculation exemption, with help from the Office for International Affairs on the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa campuses.

Help choosing

UFS's Academic Advising service helps students choose and plan their studies. Faculty experts are also available at UFS's on-campus open day events.

Costs

Tuition depends on your programme, and UFS publishes programme prices each year. Read more on the UFS fees page.

Admission requirements

UFS uses its own Admission Point (AP), in which Life Orientation can add a point if you score 60% or more. See the UFS admission requirements page and the how to apply page.
