Students at the University of the Free State (UFS) use Student Self Service, on Oracle PeopleSoft, for applications and administration, and the UFS password self-service system to manage their password. The guidance below comes from UFS's application tracking guide and its ICT Services password FAQ.
Reaching Student Self Service
On the UFS website, click the Students tab to go to KovsieLife, then click Student Self Service. Sign in with your student number as the user ID, and your UFS password. You land on the Student Services Center, where you can view your applications and other student information.
Changing your password
UFS students must change their passwords every 90 days, and UFS emails you when yours is about to expire.
- Go to the UFS password self-service website.
- Sign in with your student number and current password.
- Click Change Password.
- Type and confirm a new password. You cannot reuse a previous password.
You may receive an email confirming the change, for security purposes.
If you forget your password
- On the password self-service site, click Forgotten Password.
- Type your student number as the username, complete the reCAPTCHA and click Search.
- Choose how to receive your one-time PIN, by SMS or to your personal email. It is valid for only 5 minutes.
- Type the security code and click Check Code.
- Type and retype your new password.
Using an authenticator app
As an optional extra, students can set up a time-based one-time PIN (TOTP) with a mobile authenticator app for password resets.
Password support
The ICT Services password FAQ also explains where students can get password support and how to update their mobile number or personal email address on the self-service system.
Keep your details current
Reset codes go to your mobile number or personal email address, so keep them up to date on the self-service system. If the number on file is wrong and you cannot log in, visit Student Academic Services on your campus during office hours with your student card and ID.
Your student card
Your UFS student card is also important. You need it, with your ID, if you visit Student Academic Services for help with your account.
Online registration
UFS publishes registration and orientation information and FAQs each year. Once your status shows that you are prepared for registration, follow the online registration steps.
