The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has around 5,800 residence bed spaces, after its new UNIBELL precinct residences opened in 2023. UWC's residences are named after great activist heroes, and they are managed by its Residential Services department. The details below come from UWC's 2026 registration and orientation guide.
Residential Services
Residential Services has three units:
- The Placement and Admin Unit: manages residence admissions from application to final notice, as well as dining systems and student billing
- The Student Housing Unit: maintains a safe and secure physical environment
- The ResLife Unit: runs student life, development, sport and support services, including academic and psychosocial well-being support such as counselling, nutrition and grief support
First Years First
UWC's First Years First Programme (FYF) is a series of activities for first-year residents. It builds supportive networks among first-years, with senior students as mentors.
Facilities
Shuttle services run between the main campus and off-campus residences. Every residence has a computer lab that students can use after working hours.
Paying for residence
Self-funded students placed in a university residence pay an upfront amount of R4,840 before registration, compared with R4,290 for students not in residence. If you are NSFAS-approved or on a bursary, contact finaid@uwc.ac.za and wait for clearance. In 2026, residences opened on 26 January.
Support in residence
Residence students can also use UWC's Centre for Student Support Services, which offers free telephonic counselling around the clock on 0800 222 333, and a counselling WhatsApp line on 087 163 2030.
Kovacs
Kovacs offers accommodation on campus, which cuts travel time and costs, with an access control system for safety. It handles its own costs, payment options and online applications on its website.
Paying your account
For self-paying students, 50% of the outstanding account is due by 30 April and the full amount by 31 July. South African students who settle early may get a settlement discount on tuition and accommodation fees. Read more on the UWC fees page.
Budgeting for residence
Include residence fees, meals and personal expenses in your financial plan, alongside tuition, books and transport.
