Mining

Mining bursaries cover mining engineering, geology, metallurgy, mine surveying and related trades. The main funders are mining companies and industry bodies, and many give preference to people from the communities around their operations, because they want a skilled local workforce.

The sector offers several routes into a career. Some awards fund a university degree, others support study at a university of technology or a trade, and some come as learnerships that mix work and training. Many include vacation work at the mine, which helps you understand the industry before you commit to it.

What funders usually ask for:

  • Strong results in Mathematics and Physical Sciences for technical degrees.
  • Acceptance into a relevant qualification.
  • For community awards, proof that you live in the named area.
  • Willingness to work for the funder after graduating, in many cases.

If a mine is near you, also check the province pages in the sidebar for community-focused awards. Our mining funding guide covers the careers and a longer list of opportunities.
