Once you apply to the University of Johannesburg (UJ), you can check the progress of your application online. UJ sends all official communication by email, so check your inbox and junk folder regularly. The steps below come from UJ's frequently asked questions and its 2027 undergraduate prospectus.
What happens after you apply
When you submit your application, UJ immediately emails you to acknowledge receipt. The email includes your student number and your application information. UJ says that processing and selection take place within 15 working days.
How to check your status
- Go to the Check Your Status page on the UJ website.
- Enter your student number, or your ID or passport number.
- Select the academic year you applied for.
- Enter the contact detail you used on your application, and complete the verification code.
If you applied on paper, UJ asks you to allow three weeks before you check your status.
How UJ selects Grade 12 learners
If you are in Grade 12, UJ makes an initial selection based on your final Grade 11 results. It does not consider Grade 12 mid-year results. UJ then allocates a final selection status based on your final Grade 12 results, which the Department of Basic Education releases in January.
If you have already finished school
If you completed Grade 12 in an earlier year, UJ selects you on your final Grade 12 results. Final selection takes place in January, when UJ ranks you along with the new Grade 12 group. If you are upgrading your results, tick the box on the application that asks whether you are upgrading.
Final admission
Registration depends on final admission in January. Even if you meet the minimum APS and subject requirements, UJ has a set number of first-year places approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training, so meeting the requirements does not guarantee a place.
Missing documents
If UJ needs more documents, email them with your UJ reference or student number in the subject line. Each scanned file must be 512 KB or smaller, in TIFF, PDF, JPG, GIF or PNG format.
Does applying early help?
UJ says that the date you apply has no impact on the outcome of your application. But it does not accept late applications after 31 October, so do not miss the deadline.
Avoid scams
UJ asks applicants to decline any offer of help to get into UJ for a fee, and to report it on 0800 872 846. Read more on the how to apply to UJ page.
