UJ Residence and Accommodation

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers a wide range of student accommodation, from residences to fully equipped apartments, on all four of its campuses. Residence places are limited, and academic admission does not automatically give you a room. The details below come from UJ's 2027 undergraduate prospectus and its 2026 student fees booklet.

How to apply for residence

Submit an online residence application. For 2027, residence applications had to reach UJ by 31 October 2026 at 12:00, the same deadline as undergraduate applications. You may only stay on the campus where you study. UJ informs you of the outcome by email, SMS or in writing.

The residence deposit

UJ automatically charges a residence deposit of R1,220 to your student account when you register online. In 2026, the minimum upfront payment before registration was R9,850 for residence students, compared with R5,950 for day students. If you cancel, UJ charges residence fees on a sliding scale according to the actual days you spent in residence.

Residence fees in 2026

  • Kingsway Campus: about R42,710 to R45,020 a year for a double room in the main complexes, and R50,400 for a single room in Lebone Women's Residence
  • Doornfontein Campus: R41,940 for a double room and R48,090 for a single room in most residences
  • Bunting Road Campus: R41,940 for a double room and R48,090 for a single room in most residences
  • Soweto Campus: from R39,240 for a double room in the 4th Residence to R63,480 for a single room in Ulwazi

Meals are not included. Every campus offers self-catering, student canteens and shopping centres, so budget for your own meals.

Registering for residence

You must be accepted for academic enrolment before you can register for a residence. If you do not register for the academic year or semester by the last official registration date, you lose your right to campus accommodation and must leave the room.

Paying residence fees

In 2026, students paid 75% of their student and residence fees by 15 April and 100% by 15 July. Read more on the UJ fees page.

Private accommodation

If UJ cannot offer you a residence place, it has accredited private off-campus accommodation. Contact the Privately Owned Student Accommodation (POSA) office at the Bunting Road Campus on 011 559 1040.

Day houses

Students who do not live in a residence can join a day house. Day house members enjoy the same benefits as residence students, including academic support, recreation and life skills programmes.
