Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

The University of Venda (Univen) publishes a 2027 prospectus with facts about the university, its four faculties, admission requirements, the APS for each programme and the documents needed for selection. Here is what it contains and how to use it.

Facts about Univen in the prospectus

  • Founded in 1982 in Thohoyandou, in the Vhembe district of Limpopo
  • Four faculties, with 41 academic departments between them
  • 218 undergraduate programmes
  • 16,600 registered students in 2025
  • On-campus accommodation for 4,140 students across 13 residences
  • A library with over 154,000 physical books and more than 37,000 digital resources
  • 26 sporting codes and extracurricular activities

Faculty sections

  • Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education
  • Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Management, Commerce and Law
  • Faculty of Science, Engineering and Agriculture

Each section lists its programmes with their APS and subject requirements, including extended degree programmes.

How Univen calculates your APS

The prospectus explains that Univen turns your percentages into points on a 10-point scale. Subjects below 40% earn no points, and Life Orientation is not counted. If you have more than seven subjects, Univen uses the seven with the highest marks.

Documents for selection

  • Grade 12 learners: your ID or passport and your Grade 11 final results, stamped by your school
  • Students at another institution: your academic record and a certificate of good conduct
  • International applicants: a study and residence permit, medical insurance and a SAQA evaluation

How to use the prospectus

  1. Calculate your APS using Univen's 10-point scale.
  2. Compare it with your programme's APS and subjects.
  3. Consider an extended programme if you fall just short.
  4. Gather your documents and apply online.

Meeting the minimum

Univen stresses that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, because places are limited, and its Senate can review the minimum points.

Support services

The prospectus highlights free student support services, such as academic advising, career development, counselling and disability support, plus free internet across the campus.

Safety and access

The prospectus notes that Univen has more than 250 security personnel and over 600 cameras across the campus, and that its library has special electronic devices and a dedicated space for students with disabilities.

Recognised qualifications

Univen's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, from NQF level 6 to level 10, are internationally recognised, according to the prospectus.

Faculty contacts

It also lists each faculty's Executive Dean, for questions about programmes.

Fees

Univen's fees booklet, published separately each year, gives the estimated cost of each programme for every year of study.
