Wits Application Status

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

After you apply to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), you follow your application on the Wits student self-service portal. All correspondence from Wits appears there, so check it regularly. The steps below come from Wits's Apply to Wits page.

Acknowledgement of your application

Wits emails you to confirm that it has received your application. The acknowledgement letter contains your person number, which becomes your student number, and the name of an Admissions Consultant to contact with queries, shown at the top right of the letter.

Log in to self-service

Log in to the self-service portal with your person or student number and your date of birth in the format YYMMDD.

How to check your status

  1. Go to the Main Menu.
  2. Select Self Service, then Student Centre.
  3. Choose Admissions, then View Academic Application Status.

To see all the correspondence sent to you, go to Main Menu, Self Service, Wits Student Self Service, then Communication History.

Keep your documents complete

Click the Manage Documents button regularly. Wits considers your application incomplete, and does not consider it, if it has not received all the required documents. Current matrics upload their final Grade 11 results, and those who have finished school upload certified copies of their matric certificates.

Provisional and firm offers

If you are in matric, Wits may make a provisional offer based on your self-reported Grade 11 results. Firm offers can only be confirmed once your final matric results are out. Each degree choice is treated as a separate application.

Accepting a firm offer

If you receive a firm offer, accept it on the self-service portal and complete the student contract, so that you can register. Places are limited, so you may accept only one offer, before the cut-off date in your offer letter or SMS. A first fee payment is also required, but you can postpone it if you cannot pay or are waiting for NSFAS.

Waitlisted or not offered a place

Wits releases information on its waitlist process later in the cycle. If you are not offered a place for any choice, Wits lists alternative options for school leavers.

Applicants from other institutions

If you studied elsewhere before, upload certified copies of your official academic records from all tertiary registrations, even if you did not complete the qualification, plus a certificate of good conduct.
