The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg offers undergraduate degrees through five faculties. Admission is competitive, and many programmes have their own selection requirements. The details below come from Wits's application pages and its course entries.
Wits's five faculties
- Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management: programmes such as the BCom, BCom in Accounting, Economic Science and the LLB
- Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment: programmes such as Civil and Electrical Engineering, and the Bachelor of Architectural Studies
- Faculty of Health Sciences: programmes such as Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy
- Faculty of Humanities: programmes such as the BA, the BA in Film and Television, Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology and the BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching
- Faculty of Science: programmes such as Computer Science and the other BSc degrees
Earlier closing dates
Some programmes close earlier than the rest. For 2027, all Health Sciences programmes, the Bachelor of Architectural Studies, the Bachelor of Audiology, the Bachelor of Speech-Language Pathology and the BA in Film and TV closed on 30 June 2026. All other undergraduate programmes closed on 30 September 2026.
Extra selection requirements
Some degrees ask for more than marks, such as a portfolio, an essay, an audition or the National Benchmark Test. Check the course entry for your programme before you apply.
Choosing your programmes
You can apply for up to three programmes, and the order does not matter, because each choice is treated as a separate application. Wits advises:
- If you apply for two programmes in one faculty, apply for one in a less restricted faculty too, such as Humanities, Commerce or Science.
- Keep your options open, especially if you apply to Health Sciences or Engineering.
- Apply for first year, and do not enter the programme duration.
The Wits Integrated Experience
Wits also runs the Wits Integrated Experience (WIE), with its own applications guide for learners who take part.
Costs
Tuition is charged per course, and Wits publishes every course fee in its annual fees book. In 2026, all students except international students paid a first payment of R9,340 before academic registration. Read more on the Wits fees page.
Admission requirements
Wits calculates an APS from your best seven subjects, including Life Orientation, with bonus points for high marks in English and Mathematics. See the Wits admission requirements page for the APS each programme needs.
If you change your mind
Do not submit a new application. If applications are still open for your new choice, amend your choices on the self-service portal.
