The Wits student self-service portal is the online platform of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) for applicants and current students. Wits calls it your very own secure portal for every matter relating to your application. The guidance below comes from Wits's application and fees pages.
Logging in
As an applicant, log in with your person or student number and your date of birth in the format YYMMDD. Your person number appears in the acknowledgement letter Wits emails you after you apply, and it later becomes your student number.
What you can do on self-service
- Check the status of your application
- Upload supporting documents, through the Documents and Communications tile and the Manage Documents button
- Update your contact details
- Read all correspondence from Wits, in the Communication History
- Amend your study choices, if applications are still open
- Accept an offer and complete your student contract
- Pay your application fee, through the Campus Finances tile
- Apply for a first fee payment postponement or a residence payment postponement
- Apply for residence, or for readmission to a residence
- View an unofficial academic transcript
Paying the application fee
The application fee is R100. On self-service, click Campus Finances, then Make a Payment and Application Fee. Use only your person or student number as the payment reference, and pay before the closing date.
Uploading documents
Click the Documents and Communications tile, then the orange Manage Documents button at the top right. Wits publishes a self-service document upload guide and a video to help you.
Postponing payments
If you cannot afford the first payment of R9,340 before academic registration, log in to self-service and apply for a first fee payment postponement. If you cannot pay the R5,000 residence instalment, complete the residence payment postponement there too. Both postponements form part of your total fees.
Keep checking
All records of correspondence from Wits are on the portal, including offers and registration details. Keep your contact details up to date there, and log in often.
Previously excluded students
If Wits excluded you before and you want to return, upload your ADM motivation through the self-service portal.
Do your own application
Under the POPI Act, you must complete your own application and accept Wits's legal declaration. Wits does not work with third-party agents who apply on behalf of applicants.
Getting help
For help, use Kudubot, call the Wits Student Call Centre on 011 717 1888, or log a query through AskWits. See the Wits application status page, or read the Wits overview.
