Construction & Built Environment

This category covers civil engineering, architecture, quantity surveying, construction management and town planning. Funders include construction and engineering firms, property bodies, government departments and the construction SETA, all of which need new professionals to build and maintain the country's infrastructure.

Each profession has its own path to professional registration. In general you complete an accredited degree, gain supervised work experience and then register with the relevant council. For that reason, many of these bursaries include vacation work with the funder, which gives you the experience you need after you graduate.

What funders usually ask for:

  • Strong results, often with Mathematics and, for some fields, Physical Sciences.
  • Acceptance into an accredited degree or diploma at a university or university of technology.
  • Willingness to do vacation work and, in some cases, to work for the funder afterwards.

Check which professional body accredits your qualification, because funders prefer accredited programmes. Our construction and built environment guide has more on careers and funding, and the engineering category lists related awards.
