DUT Residence and Accommodation

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has residences in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, managed by its Department of Student Housing and Residence Life. Accommodation is limited and not guaranteed. The details below come from DUT's Study Opportunities 2027 guide and its 2026 student fees booklet.

Who qualifies

Only applicants who live 30 km or more from the university qualify for accommodation. Admission to residence depends on available space, acceptable academic progress and a good record of behaviour.

How to apply

  1. Indicate on your CAO application that you need accommodation.
  2. If you accept a firm offer, Student Housing emails an application link to your personal email address from the CAO form.
  3. Student Housing processes your application and pre-allocates you according to your qualification.
  4. Once allocated, you receive an email with instructions on how to complete residence registration.
  5. Register for your academic programme at the beginning of the year, then complete residence registration online, or go to Student Housing if you have problems.

Residence fees in 2026

  • Durban residences: from R41,800 a year at Berea, Walsingham and Straford to R53,337 at the Student Village and Winterton
  • Pietermaritzburg (Indumiso): R36,000 for a single room and R30,000 for a double room

Residence fees include a house committee levy of R150 a year. In 2026, the first instalment for residence was R5,983 for annual students.

Damage and keys

DUT has waived the residence security deposit, but students who damage residence property pay for it. Return your room keys and proximity card when you leave, or you pay their replacement cost.

Outsourced residences

Students in outsourced residences bear the full cost, and withdrawing gives no refund unless a new student takes the space.

Important rules

Self-paying students who have not settled their first-semester account do not qualify for residence in the second semester. Students on non-formal or in-service courses are not eligible for DUT residences.

Paying residence fees

For 2026, the semester first instalment for residence was R3,668. The residence instalment plan applies only to self-paying and sponsored students, because NSFAS covers residence costs for its continuing students.

Support for first-years in residence

DUT's Student Counselling centre runs workshops to help first-years adjust to campus and residence life, on topics such as dealing with diversity and conflict resolution.

Residence life

Each residence has a residence coordinator, a residence advisor, student residence assistants, an elected house committee and floor representatives. A resident educational programme supports students academically.
