The University of Johannesburg (UJ) publishes a 2027 Undergraduate Prospectus for school-leavers and other first-year applicants. It brings together the admission rules, programmes, campus information, accommodation and funding in one document. UJ notes that the information was correct at the time of publication, in April 2026. Here is what the prospectus covers and how to use it.
What is in the UJ prospectus
- Applying at UJ: online and paper applications, closing dates and how to check your status
- How to determine your APS: UJ's Admission Point Score, from your six school subjects, excluding Life Orientation
- Campuses: Auckland Park Kingsway, Auckland Park Bunting Road, Doornfontein and Soweto
- Campus life and support: PsyCaD, the libraries, health services and the Centre for Academic Technologies
- Student accommodation: residences, the R1,220 residence deposit and residence contacts
- Bursaries and loans: merit bursaries, the Orange Carpet programme, leadership, culture and sports bursaries, NSFAS and Fundi
- Faculty and college sections: every programme in Art, Design and Architecture, the College of Business and Economics, Education, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law and Science
How to use the prospectus
- Work out your APS using the table in the prospectus.
- Go to the faculty section for the field you want, and compare your APS and subject results with each programme's requirements.
- Choose two study options that you meet, ideally one with some margin.
- Check the campus where each programme is offered, because you attend classes there.
- Apply online before the closing date.
Closing dates in the 2027 prospectus
All undergraduate programmes and student accommodation applications closed on 31 October 2026 at 12:00. UJ does not accept late applications.
Applying is free
UJ applications are free. The prospectus warns that payments to UJ must only be made into a UJ bank account, and asks applicants to decline any offer of paid help to get into UJ and report it.
Requirements are minimums
The prospectus stresses that meeting a programme's minimum APS and subject requirements does not guarantee a place, because UJ has a set number of first-year places approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
Paper applications
The prospectus also explains paper applications. You choose two study options and submit the form to any of UJ's four campuses, then allow three weeks before checking your status. All official communication is sent by email.
Other UJ documents
Alongside the prospectus, UJ publishes a student fees booklet each year, with tuition, residence fees and payment dates. Read it together with the prospectus when you plan your costs.
