University of Zululand Bursaries and Funding

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Students at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) are funded mainly through NSFAS, external bursaries and sponsors, and UNIZULU merit awards. The university's website links to a Bursaries and Loans portal and its Financial Aid Office, based on the KwaDlangezwa campus. The details below come from UNIZULU's registration FAQs, its first-year registration page and its student fee guide.

NSFAS

NSFAS and bursary-funded students do not pay a minimum initial payment at registration. To check the progress of your NSFAS application, log in to your myNSFAS account. If NSFAS rejects your application, you can appeal on the NSFAS website by following the prompts.

Sponsored students

All applicants with firm offers who have a sponsor must send their original sponsor letter, and UNIZULU may allow financial registration once it has verified the sponsorship. UNIZULU's fee guide asks for an award letter from each sponsor, addressed to the university on official letterhead. Sponsors use a separate bank account from self-funded students, so they should follow UNIZULU's sponsor payment instructions.

Merit awards

UNIZULU's fee guide says merit awards may be given to students who performed exceptionally in the previous academic year, or the year they were last registered. Academic performance is the main requirement, and financial need is secondary. UNIZULU also budgets each year for merit bursaries for outstanding students, so ask the Financial Aid Office about the current criteria.

Self-funded students

If you are self-funded, you pay a deposit of 50% of the residence amount once UNIZULU accepts you into an available residence. You can pay by ABSA bank deposit, card at the Student Accounts Office, EFT or online through iEnabler. UNIZULU does not accept cash.

Students with debt

If you owe fees from an earlier year, you can apply for a payment plan. With debt below R10,000, you may register once you complete the plan. With debt above R10,000, you must settle 50% or reduce it to R10,000 first. Final-year students with up to two outstanding modules may also apply for a payment plan.

Checking your balance

Check your fee balance by SMS to 34763 in the format "UZ [student number] B", by email to fees@unizulu.ac.za, or online on iEnabler.

Funding for postgraduates

UNIZULU's Research Office administers many national funding opportunities, mainly for honours, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral students.

Plan early

Apply for NSFAS and other bursaries early in your matric year, because funding decisions take time and you need to know your position before registration in January.
