University of Zululand Residences

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) has a limited number of bed spaces on its KwaDlangezwa and Richards Bay campuses. Students who cannot be accommodated on campus must find other accommodation. The details below come from UNIZULU's first-year registration page, its registration FAQs and its Student Housing section.

Limited places

UNIZULU warns that paying an upfront initial deposit for residence does not mean you will be allocated a room. Apply for residence as early as possible, and have a back-up plan.

How residence applications work

UNIZULU takes residence requests online. According to its system guidance, a residence application depends on having an academic application for the same year, and you can list several residence choices in order of preference.

The residence deposit

If you are self-funded, you pay a deposit of 50% of the residence amount after UNIZULU accepts you into an available residence. NSFAS and bursary-funded students do not pay anything upfront.

Registering for your room

UNIZULU's Student Housing section asks students to register academically first, and then finalise their residence registration according to the room allocations on the system. Rooms that are not taken up by the deadline can be offered to other qualifying students.

Paying

You can pay tuition and residence fees by ABSA bank deposit, which clears in 24 hours, by card at the Student Accounts Office, which clears immediately, by EFT, or online on the Student iEnabler. Cash is not accepted. Use only your student number as the reference.

Students with debt

If you owe fees from an earlier year, sort out a payment plan before you register, because you cannot register for your studies, or then for residence, until UNIZULU clears you.

Campus life

The KwaDlangezwa campus is home to UNIZULU's four faculties and to support services such as the Campus Clinic, Protection Services, Student Housing and the Financial Aid Office. Students on both campuses can join 24 sports codes and many societies.

Students with disabilities

If you have a disability, upload a medical report or doctor's letter, and contact the Disability Unit about any accommodations you need.

International students

International students must also provide a SAQA evaluation, a valid passport and study permit, proof of financial means and proof of medical insurance before they can register and move into a residence.

What your fees include

UNIZULU charges tuition per module, and tuition includes lab and exam fees, library subscriptions, student facilities and personal accident insurance. Residence fees, meals and prescribed textbooks are separate costs to budget for.
