The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) publishes its undergraduate admission information online, with an entry requirements page, an individual course entry for every programme, and its annual fees book. Together, these work as Wits's prospectus. Here is what they contain and how to use them.
The entry requirements page
Wits's undergraduate entry requirements page explains:
- Which school-leaving qualifications Wits accepts, including the NSC, international qualifications, the NC(V) and the Senior Certificate (as amended)
- The basic requirements for entry into any of its five faculties: an NSC from the DBE, IEB or SACAI with a bachelor's pass, certain levels of achievement, and any extra faculty or school requirements
- How Wits tabulates the points score for all subjects
- Which programmes need Mathematics and which accept Mathematical Literacy
Important rules
- English must be taken as a home or first additional language.
- Mathematics is compulsory for numerate programmes in Commerce, Law and Management, Engineering and the Built Environment, Science and most Health Sciences programmes.
- Mathematical Literacy is considered for the LLB, Education and Humanities, except Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
- Only one matric upgrade or rewrite attempt is considered.
Other qualifications
The page has separate sections for international qualifications, the NC(V) and the Senior Certificate (as amended), each with its own entry rules. International applicants should also read Wits's information for international students.
Course entries
Each programme has its own course entry, with its minimum APS, subject requirements, duration and any extra selection requirements, such as a portfolio, essay, audition or the National Benchmark Test.
The fees book
Wits publishes an annual fees book, with the fee for every course, the first payment, residence rentals and meal prices. In 2026, the first payment before academic registration was R9,340.
How to use Wits's information
- Calculate your APS using Wits's points table, including bonus points for English and Mathematics.
- Check each course entry for your choices.
- Note the closing date: 30 June for Health Sciences and some other programmes, and 30 September for the rest.
- Apply for up to three programmes online, and pay the R100 application fee on the self-service portal.
Meeting the minimum
Wits notes that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place, because the Department of Higher Education and Training approves a specific number of first-year places.
Funding information
Wits's scholarships page explains the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship and University Entrance Scholarships, based on your first matric APS.
