TUT Bursaries and Funding

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Students at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) can be funded through external bursaries, internal university awards and NSFAS. TUT's Financial Aid office manages these funding categories, and each one has its own terms and closing dates. The details below come from TUT's 2027 General Information for First Year Enrolment.

Follow the process

To be considered for funding in any academic year, you must follow the right process and meet the terms and conditions of each funding category. TUT warns that, as a general rule, it does not accept late or incomplete funding applications. So check the Financial Aid section of TUT's website early in the year.

External funding

External funding means bursaries from sources outside the university. These include undergraduate and postgraduate bursaries from public, private, corporate and industry funders, government departments, parastatals and international sources. TUT lists funding opportunities on its website.

Internal university funding

TUT awards internal bursaries to students at every level, from first-time entering students to postgraduates. Its aim is to attract and keep quality students by rewarding excellent academic and non-academic performance. Each award category has its own policy and criteria, which are set out on the Financial Aid website.

NSFAS

NSFAS funds academically deserving students who need financial help. According to TUT, you should apply if you are a South African citizen and:

  • Your combined family income is less than R350,000 a year, or less than R600,000 if you live with a disability
  • You are a new applicant, or you passed Grade 12 in an earlier year but never registered at a university
  • You have never received NSFAS funding before

Apply online on the NSFAS website and create an account. You need your own cellphone number and email address to receive a one-time PIN. Keep your application reference number, because it is your only proof that you applied. If you take a gap year, you must apply again.

Who makes the decision

TUT does not decide on NSFAS funding. NSFAS makes the decision, and TUT then confirms the outcome. Track your application on the NSFAS website, and keep your details updated there and on TUT's system.
