TUT Residence and Accommodation

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) describes itself as the largest residential educational institution in South Africa. Its university-owned residences are managed by Accommodation, Residence Life and Catering (ARLC), and TUT advises first-year students to apply for ARLC accommodation. The details below come from TUT's 2027 General Information for First Year Enrolment and its student fees booklet.

How to apply

When you apply for academic admission, indicate on the same application that you need accommodation. TUT considers only online applications, and it does not consider late applications for placement. Admission to a residence depends on academic acceptance and on the space available.

Placement and registration

TUT notifies successful applicants from November that they have been provisionally placed in a residence. Once you register for your studies, you must register online in the residence to secure your place. Spaces are filled on a first come, first served basis.

Residences by campus

  • Pretoria Campus: Astra, Denise, Heidehof, Minjonet and Polonaise for women, Monitor for men, and the mixed residences Legae, Lezard, Magalies and Orion
  • Soshanguve Campus: Sosh1 and Sosh3 for women, Sosh2 and Sosh4 for men, and several mixed residences
  • Ga-Rankuwa Campus: Gaetsho and Skierlik for women, Legae for men, and Inkululeko and Lebone as mixed residences
  • eMalahleni and Mbombela Campuses: mixed residences

The mentorship programme

All first-year residents must take part in the mentorship programme. TUT places students in residences according to their courses, and appoints mentors to support each resident academically and with mental well-being.

Paying for residence

  • You pay nothing when you submit a residence application.
  • A compulsory advance payment of R1,200 is due before residence registration.
  • Each semester's fee is 50% of the annual residence fee.
  • For year accommodation, the balance is paid in ten instalments from 1 January to 31 October.

TUT gives no discount on residence fees. Residence fees are available from the Residence Administration and Information Office at each campus.

Settling the account

Accommodation fees for the current year must be settled by 30 October.

Moving out

Cancelling your studies does not cancel your residence place automatically. You must sign off at the residence on the day you leave to receive any credit.

Facilities

Residences have 24-hour security, and washing machines and tumble dryers. Some residences are equipped for students with disabilities, so state any disability clearly on your application.

Private accommodation

If ARLC residences are full, TUT refers first-year students to leased and accredited private accommodation at each campus. On the Pretoria, Arcadia and Arts campuses, contact PTAPrivateAccom@tut.ac.za or 012 382 4071.
