University of Mpumalanga Residences

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has residences on its Mbombela and Siyabuswa campuses, with self-catered and catered options in older and newly built residences. If you apply for residence, UMP's Student Housing contacts you separately. The details below come from UMP's 2026 fees handbook and its registration information.

Residence fees in 2026

  • Older self-catered residences: R23,461 for a single room and R15,304 for a double room, on both campuses
  • Newly built self-catered residences at Mbombela: R29,412 single, R30,882 single with en suite, R19,152 double, and R45,329 for self-catering units
  • Newly built residences at Siyabuswa: R23,461 single and R19,152 double
  • Catered residences at Mbombela: from R61,377 to R76,955, including meals

Catered residences are not available at Siyabuswa.

The initial deposit

In 2026, the initial payment for accommodation was R3,498.40 for most students, payable before registration, acceptance and allocation of an on-campus room. Students with confirmed funding for accommodation do not pay it. The balance is due in two equal instalments, by 30 April and before the end of the first semester.

Second-semester placements

If UMP accepts you into on-campus accommodation in the second semester, the full accommodation amount is payable when you are allocated a room.

Choosing a residence type

UMP's fees handbook separates older established residences from newly built ones, and self-catered rooms from catered rooms. Newly built rooms at Mbombela cost more, and some include an en-suite bathroom. Catered rooms include meals, while self-catered students budget for their own food.

Applying

You add a residence application during your online application, using Add New Residence Application after choosing your programmes. Student Housing then contacts you separately about your application.

Arrival dates

In 2026, first-year students arrived in residences on 25 January, and returning students on 1 February.

Prior debt

UMP does not allocate on-campus accommodation in a new year unless the previous year's fee balance is paid in full.

Cancelling

To cancel your accommodation, advise UMP in writing and complete the relevant form at the Residence Office before you leave. All outstanding fees are due immediately, and your liability depends on the date UMP receives your notice.

Cancellation dates for tuition

For first-semester modules, cancelling by the end of February costs nothing, by the end of March 50% of the tuition fee, and from 1 April 100%. For second-semester modules, the dates are the end of July, the end of August and 1 September.

International students

International students from SADC countries pay 50% of their tuition and accommodation fees as an initial deposit, and others pay 100%.

Contacts

For accommodation questions, contact the Mbombela Campus residence office on 013 002 0023, or the Siyabuswa Campus office. See the UMP fees page.
