The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in Vanderbijlpark offers advanced diplomas, postgraduate diplomas, master's degrees and doctorates. Its research office sets the admission rules for master's and doctoral study, which differ by faculty. Here is how postgraduate study at VUT works, based on its official pages.

Closing dates

For the 2027 academic year, VUT said that the opening and closing dates for programmes from advanced diploma to PhD would be communicated during the year. Check VUT's application page and its research office for the current dates. In 2026, master's and doctoral registration ran from 8 January to 31 March.

How to apply

  1. Check your faculty's admission requirements on the VUT Research website.
  2. For a doctorate, prepare a CV for the head of department and a draft research proposal.
  3. Apply online through VUT's application portal.
  4. Pay the R110 application fee on the portal, which you must do before you can submit.

Master's admission requirements

Requirements differ by faculty. They generally include a relevant postgraduate diploma, honours or four-year degree, an average of 65%, and a pass of 60% or 65% in Research Methodology. Some faculties also ask applicants to give a short PowerPoint presentation.

Doctoral admission requirements

You need a master's degree with a substantial research component, and some disciplines require further research training. Faculties may also ask for proof of previous research experience, a draft research proposal for approval before registration, and a CV covering your academic history and research.

Other conditions

  • Your topic must suit higher degree research, and must not repeat research already submitted for another degree
  • A qualified staff member must be available to supervise you
  • You must have access to the resources and budget to finish in time
  • You must have no outstanding debt with VUT, and international applicants must show financial capacity
  • You must have sufficient English language proficiency
  • You must keep in suitable contact with your supervisors, and if you work, VUT considers whether you can meet the timelines

VUT describes research degrees as a chance to follow a specific research interest for several years and contribute new knowledge.
