Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Students at the University of Limpopo (UL) are funded through NSFAS, SETA bursaries, government bursaries, private and merit bursaries, and UL's tuition waiver and SRC Trust funds. UL's Financial Aid Office handles each funding category through its own email address. The details below come from UL's 2026 student fees guide.

Funding categories and contacts

  • NSFAS prefunded bursaries: prefundedbursaries@ul.ac.za
  • SETA bursaries: setabursaries@ul.ac.za
  • NSFAS DHET main bursaries: through your faculty's financial aid email, such as humanities.financialaid@ul.ac.za or hsc.financialaid@ul.ac.za

NSFAS

NSFAS funds qualifying South African students from low-income households, and UL's Financial Aid Office manages NSFAS students by faculty. Apply on the NSFAS website before its closing date. Many Limpopo municipalities and the provincial government also fund local students.

Self-funded students

If you pay for yourself, you make an advance payment before registration. In 2026, South African and SADC students paid R3,000 towards tuition and R2,000 towards residence.

Early settlement discount

UL gives a 10% reduction on your debt if you settle early:

  • 100% of annual tuition and residence fees paid by 31 May 2026
  • 100% of first-semester fees paid by 31 March 2026, for first-semester-only students
  • 100% of second-semester fees paid by 30 August 2026, for second-semester-only students

Settling historic debt may also qualify for a discount, subject to approval by the Chief Financial Officer. Students approved for other discounts or rebates are not eligible for more.

Family rebates

Self-funded students with siblings, stepchildren or legally adopted children sharing a parent, who are studying full-time at UL at the same time, may apply for rebates on tuition and residence fees: 10% per student for two students, and 15% per student for three. If one withdraws, the rebate is revoked.

Paying the balance

For year modules, 25% of your tuition must be paid by 31 March, 50% by 30 June, 75% by 31 August and 100% by 31 October. Read more on the UL fees page.

Application and late fees

UL's 2026 fee guide lists a non-refundable application fee of R250 for local students, R750 for international students and a late registration fee of R350 for local students. UL does not process applications until it receives the fee. Current UL students continuing without a break do not pay it.
