MUT Application Status

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

All first-year applications to Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) go through the Central Applications Office (CAO), so you check your application status on the CAO website. MUT does not allow or consider walk-in applications. The guidance below comes from MUT's registration and application pages.

Check your status on the CAO website

MUT says there are no walk-ins, and asks applicants to check their application status on the CAO website. Also watch your email and SMS messages for registration updates, because MUT sends them there.

How MUT selects

MUT receives more than 80,000 applications from first-time students each year for about 3,500 places, so selection is difficult. It prioritises the best-qualified applicants and those who chose MUT as their first or second choice.

Selection dates

MUT's 2026 calendar shows that it selects 2027 candidates who are still in matric from 28 September to 23 October 2026, and those who already have their matric from 1 October to 4 December 2026.

Closing dates

MUT's application page says applications open in January and close on 30 September, with late applications accepted until 30 November at a fee set by the CAO. Its 2026 rules handbook gives 31 October for most programmes, so apply by 30 September to be safe.

Documents

South African applicants need their final Grade 11 results, Grade 12 June results, or National Senior Certificate or statement of results, and their ID. Students transferring from other universities submit an academic record and a certificate of conduct. Non-South African applicants also need medical insurance, a police clearance certificate and their school leaving certificate.

Once you are accepted

MUT sends your student number by SMS. To register, you need original and certified documents, including your matric certificate and ID, proof of payment and the SMS confirming your student number. Self-funded students pay the minimum initial payment into MUT's bank account using their student number as the reference.

Registration dates in 2026

  • First-semester late registration: 2 to 6 February 2026
  • Second-semester registration: 13 to 17 July 2026
  • Second-semester late registration: 20 to 24 July 2026

The acceptance fee

MUT charges a non-refundable acceptance fee of R500 for each application, which counts towards your deposit once you register. It cannot be transferred to another academic period.

Beware of scams

MUT warns applicants about scams. Pay only into MUT's official bank account, and never pay anyone who claims they can get you a place.

If you get stuck, contact the MUT Admissions Call Centre on 031 819 9299 or info@mut.ac.za. For CAO questions, contact the CAO on 031 268 4444. See the MUT student portal page.
