Students at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) are funded through NSFAS, SETAs, private bursaries and scholarships, and company bursary programmes. MUT's Financial Aid Office (FAO) handles all of these. The details below come from MUT's Student Fees and Finance Rules Handbook for 2026, its student portal page and its bursaries page.
One email for funding queries
MUT's Financial Aid Office asks students to use enquiriesfao@mut.ac.za for all matters relating to NSFAS, SETAs, private bursaries and scholarships, appeals, unpaid allowances, refunds and payments. Send bank statements and certified ID copies to statements@mut.ac.za.
NSFAS students
- Students approved for NSFAS are cleared for registration once MUT receives the list of approved students from NSFAS.
- First-time entering students are verified against the NSFAS system, and are cleared if their status is "waiting for registration".
- NSFAS does not fund late registration of modules or late registration penalties, so these are for your own account.
- Students with an NSFAS appeal must pay the registration deposit to register, and can claim it back if the appeal succeeds.
- NSFAS does not fund postgraduate or advanced diploma qualifications.
External bursaries
The Financial Aid Office needs an original sponsorship letter from each sponsor, on official letterhead with an authorised signature, confirming what the award covers, such as tuition, books or meals, and the amount. The letter must show that the funds will be paid to MUT, not the student. Submit it at least three days before registration for early financial clearance. Photocopies and faxes are not accepted, and returning bursary students are not cleared automatically.
Bursary programmes
MUT's bursaries page advertises company bursary programmes, such as the Eskom Bursary Programme for 2027, and opportunities for engineering students from specific districts. These usually ask for proof of registration on university letterhead, a residence fee statement if applicable, and MUT's banking details on official letterhead.
Sponsors' responsibilities
Bursars should pay the registration deposit upfront, unless they confirm in writing that they will pay once the student is registered. They must settle registration and residence fees by the end of the term.
Self-funded students
In 2026, the minimum initial payment was R4,000 for annual tuition only, or R18,025 with an internal residence. Read more on the MUT fees page.
Refunds of credit balances
MUT assesses credit balances individually, and refunds go to the person who paid. You need a copy of your ID, a bank statement and proof of the original deposit.
