MUT Admission Guide and Handbooks

Reviewed by Makona Mandla · Last checked 5 November 2026

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) publishes its undergraduate admission information on its website and in its annual General Information and Regulations handbook. Its programmes and minimum points are also listed in the CAO handbook, because all first-year applications go through the CAO. Here is what these sources contain and how to use them.

MUT's admission pages

MUT's admission requirements and apply pages explain:

  • How faculties calculate a points aggregate from your best five subjects
  • The minimum entrance requirements: a diploma pass, or N3 with 50% in Mathematics and English, five subjects at level 4 for diploma study, and English at level 4
  • Each faculty's subject requirements, such as English, Mathematics and Accounting for Management Sciences
  • Closing dates, documents and the application process through the CAO

The General Information and Regulations handbook

MUT's 2026 handbook lists its three faculties and their departments, the academic calendar, the general rules for admission and registration, financial aid, student awards and the general residence regulations.

Faculties and departments

  • Faculty of Engineering: Chemical, Civil Engineering and Survey, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
  • Faculty of Management Sciences: Accounting and Law, Communication, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Office Technology, and Public Administration and Economics
  • Faculty of Applied and Health Sciences: Agriculture, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Community Extension, Environmental Health, ICT, Mathematical Sciences and Nature Conservation

The CAO handbook

MUT's admission pages say that minimum points are set by each faculty and listed in the CAO handbook. Use it to find MUT's programme codes and points.

The fees handbook

MUT's Student Fees and Finance Rules Handbook for 2026 sets out the acceptance fee of R500, the minimum initial payments, payment options, refunds and residence fees.

How to use these sources

  1. Check MUT's minimum entrance and faculty subject requirements.
  2. Calculate your points from your best five subjects.
  3. Find your programme's code and points in the CAO handbook.
  4. Apply through the CAO, ideally with MUT as your first choice.

Closing dates

MUT's application page says applications close on 30 September, with late applications until 30 November, and Engineering second-semester applications close on 31 May.

Competition

MUT receives more than 80,000 first-year applications each year for about 3,500 places, so meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.

Tips for applicants

Use the current year's CAO handbook and MUT handbook, because programme codes, points and rules can change. Apply before the main closing date rather than waiting for the late period, and keep your CAO reference number safe so you can track your application.
