Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has internal residences and external, or new internal, residences, with different fees. Residence rules are set out in MUT's general rules and regulations. The details below come from MUT's 2026 general handbook and its Student Fees and Finance Rules Handbook for 2026.
Applying
Applications for residence for the following year close on 31 October each year. Late applications are considered if accommodation is available. The Dean of Students screens applications, and the House Committee helps the Superintendent allocate rooms. You apply for residence through MUT's student portal, after your academic registration.
Minimum payments in 2026
- Tuition and an internal residence: R18,025 annually, or R8,890 for a semester
- Tuition and an external or new internal residence: R28,950 annually, or R14,045 for a semester
These include the tuition deposit, residence deposit, SRC levy and sport levy.
The residence deposit
Residence registration is only finalised once the deposit is paid. The deposit is refundable if no accommodation is available, or if you are not selected as an MUT student. You may forfeit it if you withdraw after a room is allocated, if you owe residence fees, or if you do not claim it within a year of leaving.
Cancelling
If you withdraw from residence, no part of the initial payment is refunded unless the Manager: Student Accommodation and Residence approves it, and a cancellation fee of R500 applies. A refund depends on your room being filled by a student not already in residence. Submit the official cancellation form, because MUT uses the date it receives your notice.
Prior debt
All residence fees from earlier years must be settled before MUT allocates you a residence.
Room-mates
MUT respects your choice of room-mates as far as possible. Requests to switch rooms after placement go in writing to the House Committee.
Keeping your place
A student who fails their academic year forfeits their residence place, but may join a waiting list. MUT can also refuse or end accommodation for misconduct, poor academic achievement, damage to property or repeatedly breaking the rules.
Leaving during the year
Residence fees are calculated per term. Give written notice to the Dean of Students before the end of a term if you will not use residence the next term. If you leave during a term, you pay for the full term.
Applying on the right form
MUT's general rules say residence applications are made on the prescribed form, from the Dean of Students or the Registrar.
NSFAS students
NSFAS-funded students have the deposit waived once their funding is confirmed. See the MUT fees page.
