Most programmes at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) take new students only in January. But TUT's 2027 prospectus lists a July intake for at least one qualification: the Diploma in Electrical Engineering, on the Pretoria Campus. Here is what the prospectus says and how to use it.
The Diploma in Electrical Engineering
- Qualification code: DPEE20, NQF level 6, 360 credits
- Campuses: Pretoria and eMalahleni, with the July intake only on the Pretoria Campus
- Intake: January and July
- Duration: at least three years, with day classes
- Closing date for applications: 30 September
Admission requirements
For applicants with a National Senior Certificate obtained in or after 2008, TUT needs a bachelor's degree or diploma endorsement, with at least level 4 in English, Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, and Physical Sciences or Technical Sciences. Applicants need an APS of at least 26, excluding Life Orientation. TUT recommends Electrical Technology and Engineering Graphics and Design.
Other routes in
TUT also considers applicants with a National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF level 4, an N3 certificate, an N6 certificate in a related engineering field, or the Higher Certificate in Electrical Engineering.
- NC(V) level 4: at least 50% for English, 60% for Mathematics and Science, 50% for two compulsory vocational subjects, and an APS of at least 26
- N3: at least 50% for English, Mathematics N3, Engineering Sciences N3 and two other subjects
- N6: an average of at least 60% for the qualification, plus an English Language Proficiency Assessment done by TUT
How selection works
Applicants who meet the minimum APS are considered until the programme is full, and preference goes to first-time entering students. Once a programme is full, TUT creates a waiting list. Applicants who do not meet the minimum may be offered the Higher Certificate in Electrical Engineering if there is space.
How to check for a July intake
- Read the intake line in your programme's entry in TUT's prospectus. Most say "January only".
- Note any campus limits, as with the Pretoria-only July intake.
- Apply before the closing date in the entry.
- Check your application status on TUT's website.
After the diploma
The prospectus lists further study options, including an advanced diploma, the BEngTech Honours, the MEng and the DEng in Electrical Engineering. Careers include the design, planning, construction and maintenance of specialised electrical engineering systems.
Other second-semester dates
TUT's sport bursaries have a separate closing date of 20 July for the second semester, and 5 March for the first semester.
