Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) offers postgraduate diplomas at NQF level 8, master's degrees and doctoral degrees across its faculties. It invites high-performing graduates to apply, and it offers automatic scholarships to top students. Here is how postgraduate study at TUT works, based on its official pages.
Faculties offering master's and doctoral degrees
- Faculty of Information and Communication Technology
- Faculty of Humanities
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
- Faculty of Management Sciences
- Faculty of Economics and Finance
Each faculty publishes a poster with programme details, admission requirements and application guidance. TUT also lists its postgraduate diplomas at NQF level 8 in a separate section of its website.
Entry requirements
Master's and doctoral entry generally needs an honours degree, a postgraduate diploma or a relevant master's degree. For example, the PhD in the Faculty of Science needs a master's degree from an accredited South African university in a related field. Admission also depends on capacity under the Student Enrolment Plan and on the availability of supervisors.
Research proposals
Requirements vary by faculty. In Science, registration is provisional until the Faculty Committee for Postgraduate Studies approves your research proposal, and selection includes a personal interview. In Humanities, a departmental research committee must approve your topic, and you submit a proposal to the department. Some Management Sciences doctorates need a preliminary doctoral proposal.
How to apply
- Read your faculty's poster and the prospectus entry for your programme.
- Contact the department about your research topic and a possible supervisor.
- Apply online at TUT's application portal before the closing date.
- Submit your research proposal and supporting documents to the department if required.
Closing dates
TUT's master's and doctoral page gave a closing date of 31 March 2026 for its latest round. Faculty rules can differ, so check your faculty's prospectus.
TUT scholarships
From 2026, TUT automatically awards scholarships to top students who continue into master's and doctoral study. Graduates with an average of 75% or more in a postgraduate diploma, honours degree or master's degree qualify. TUT lists R80,000 for a master's degree and R100,000 for a doctoral degree, depending on available funds.
Postdoctoral fellowships
TUT also advertises postdoctoral research fellowships. One engineering call for 2026 and 2027 offers R250,000 for one year to researchers whose doctorate was awarded within the last five years.
Cancelling postgraduate studies
TUT's fee rules say that there is no automatic credit when a postgraduate student cancels. Each case is dealt with on merit. For questions, contact TUT on 086 110 2421 or general@tut.ac.za.
